Muthukora Hills

Muthukora Hills, located around 3 kilometres from Kaippally near Poonjar, is one of the highest peaks in Kottayam

Social media played a significant role in popularising this obscure mountain that was familiar to only the locals before. Ideal for a weekend trip, Muthukora Hills is the perfect spot for trekking enthusiasts. As the footfall in these hills is still in its early stages, careful attention is needed to traverse the trails. The sheer cliffs and the constant winds make the hike extremely adventurous.

The vast area on the top, filled with trees and various shrubs, stretches over a distance of three kilometres. The panoramic view from the summit is unmatched in its beauty. On a clear day, one can see the localities of four districts - Kottayam, Idukki, Pathanamthitta and Ernakulam from the hilltop. Ilaveezhapoonchira, Ilickal Kallu and Vagamon are some of the major tourist attractions in the vicinity of Muthukora Hills.

The home and final resting place of J J Murphy, the Irish planter who set up India's first commercially successful rubber plantation in Kerala, is also situated near Muthukora Hills. An early morning trek across the hilltop watching the rising sun slowly dissipating the mist with its warmth will be a rejuvenating experience for sure.
